About our club
We are a running club with a mission to get people active and fitter, offering a chance to be part of a very friendly and encouraging team. We cater for all levels of runners, with varied sessions throughout the week.
Poplar Running Club was set up in Loughborough by Lee Dawson, Darryl Hughes and Kevin Brooks with the aim to get people running with a smile on their face. Now the club has grown to more than 100 members of all ages and abilities, and has running groups in Loughborough, Mountsorrel and Quorn. We do several different events during the week, all at 6:30pm:
- Monday – Coached Sessions
- Tuesday – Mountsorrel Runners
- Wednesday – Main Club night / Beginners Night
- Thursday – Endurance / Longer Distance Runs
- Junior Pops – a couple of times a week we have separate coached sessions for under 16s
- Saturday – parkruns, we have a regular large attendance at Rushcliffe and other local parkrun
- Details of all runs are always posted on facebook – please check the Poplar Runners Facebook Group for the latest information
We are an ARC and UKA affiliated running club that welcomes runners of all abilities. Complete beginners are made very welcome, we’ve offered a couch to 5k course and always have a number of complete beginners being supported.
Joining our runs
It is entirely free to come along & join in a few of our sessions. There’s no need to book, just introduce yourself to a run leader on the day. We only ask that you’re over 16, and ensure you wear appropriate kit for the conditions.

WOW what a season, our third season in the LRRL and each year we keep on improving, Every single runner and supporter has been outstanding and I think everyone should be super proud of there achievements. Let’s start with the ladies individual awards. Captain Nicola was second in the whole of Leicestershire overall, another outstanding campaign and becoming county champion at the Carl Rutt 10k, here’s the table and as you can see, Nicola is clear in second. great work skipper.
Team retults again were outstanding, the Senior mens team ran a strong West End team right to the end and missed out on promotion by a few points, but the mens vets did a great job and got promoted to division 2, well done you dinosaurs. Now once again the ladies ripped the whole league to bits, the ladies senior team are champions of Leicestershire and the ladies B team are champions as well, This stems from a strong season from all ladies, and those who might not be in our top 6, but are taking points of other teams first 6 ladies, the B league contains all clubs and to sit at the top is amazing, Massive well done ladies.
This year the league ran an overall mixed team competition and we came third overall with joint scores which is once again amazing especially as 29 clubs compete and little pops sit 3rd…… pat on the back deserved here!
The individual results read well too, with some great performances, Daniel Ryan leading the way with Martin Button just behind but 4th overall in his age category
Congratulations to Becs and Phil for completing their first full Ironman Triathlon this weekend.
Two incredible club athletes and great performances for both, finishing high in the rankings, after 100+ miles on the bike and a full marathon. Not bad for your first full tri!
As a club we have a small but growing group of Tri athletes, taking on rides with the Poplar Cycling Club, and open water swim sessions. New members are always welcome – please get in touch to learn more, or talk to Phil and Becs.
5 runners from Poplar Running Clubs 2017 Couch to 5k course graduated at Rushcliffe Parkrun on 24th June 2017 – Congratulations to them all!
What a success our 2017 C25k course has been – 73 runners have graduated and many are now running regularly on club nights as a result.
A huge thank you is due to every club member that helped with running the course.
On Saturday 3rd June a further 56 runners graduated from the C25k course at Rushcliffe Parkrun.
We were blessed with a warm, sunny summer morning with a light breeze – just perfect for running.
It was an emotional and exciting morning – there were lots of happy faces (and a few tears of relief and joy!).
Afterwards certificates of completion were presented by Lee Dawson (Club Chairman), prior to celebrating with the graduation cake.
Thanks to all Run Leaders and volunteers and the participants for making it such a happy occasion!
